Dear Afrikan girl, One word too Risky...

Friday June 28 2014

DIARY OF A SUPPOSED-TO-BE-BALLING-AFRIKAN-GIRL

Dear Afrikan Girl,

We all know that words from a wise man or woman are like a secret stash of gourmet food in the heart of a war!
As if we haven't studied this book several times... SMH

****

We hang on to every word!

                                                                      ****

Picture this in the heart of a war...

No, No, No... Those words are not an excerpt from the brainy dramatic quotes in Chinua Achebe's African Series, or from  the Proverbs Chapters in the Bible!

This is just how I felt earlier today when the world's smartest quiet man, aka my father, said these three words to me...

'You Are very creative'!

Yes, some of you went ''So? What's the big deal'?

And you are right...but my sisters,  you would not understand! You don't know what my journey has been, but allow me to explain! Grab your glass of palm wine, and listen this story!

My dad is a quiet man. You could be in the room with us for a long time, and NEVER hear him speak.

The only times he opens his mouth, some thing really funny comes out, or something really smart, said in the most dramatic sparsity of words that you can imagine...

***

He acts as if words are gold, (which they are) , but the point is he is quiet and doesn't throw out compliments every given minute like my mother or myself. . . not that he doesn't feel the same feelings we do, he just doesn't go around saying around saying everything on his mind like we do. (Opposites attract right? Yeah, that pretty much explains my mother and father.)

But the point is,

It wasn't just the words! it was his face, his voice... everything about the delivery was just... impactful
and my heart fluttered like a butterfly!

Its hard for even a wordsmith like myself to explain the emotion accurately for it seems as though words would only cheapen it...

However, if it were a color, it would be the brightest shade of yellow! If it were an animal, it would be a hyper puppy...

But first...

Let me tell you how it all started!
>>>

Making that Tiwa- Davido decision last night was not an easy one, but my late grandfather always told me when I was a child  that the sunshine always came after the rain... not that he owns that quote. He was only paraphrasing a famous quote that all of us know only too well...
                                                 .........................
When I woke up that morning, I was all alone in my bed. That's obvious because it was 11.30am and J was already at work... he works so hard, you have to admire him, (J is my hunk).

You want to see a pic? CLICK HERE.

I could barely remember my dream, if any. I just remember being so tired, because I was awake all night trying to add some content to this blog.

I had only gone to sleep at 8AM, and big eyes like mine loved to be closed when possible. Yes, the word is called sleep, but I 'd rather say shut eye, it sounds fancier!

But today was going to be an exciting day! My parents were coming back from Brazil, and we were heading to Dublin next! on a ROAD TRIP!!

(CALIFORNIA has a Dublin... people! Geography) that's for those of you who were about to cry, for fear that I would drive to Dublin, Ireland. I know I only have 10 bucks, but it ain't that bad. lol.

As usual, I rolled over to my side to check out my IPhone, and realized that besides the usual missed calls and texts that I am used to getting daily, there were two missed calls from my dad. My dad hates when you miss his call, FYI, and he only has a Cameroonian number so calling him back when its on roaming is a little tricky. Only the SMS seem to go through (blame it on MTN.)

But either ways, I texted back, and got no response from him! Facebook was my next stop, and as I perused through my profile, one major thing caught my eye, and it was that  my homeboy, Fosho just released a new song, which I will share with you here...

I listened to the song when I showered, and hummed it, as I waltzed past my bathroom door to the living room to put some kidney beans to the boil. My parents would be hungry when they got here, and I wanted to have some food ready for them, by the time they arrived.

Before I could go any further with my cooking, his call came in again. This time, I picked it up.

My dad has a stern voice, which lets you know he is a dad- your dad; but it also has a dot of humor; case in point, my father is one of  the funniest quiet men you will ever meet...

But this story is not about him. Our phone conversation went like this:

ME:   ''Hello''?
DAD: ''Where are you''

INGRAM Alert*: [Long time ago, I would be on an okada, rushing home and trying to sound calm whole lying that I'm in the bathroom] (Read story here)

But luckily I'm an adult now!
Today, my answer was ' I'm home.', to which he replied
'Good, we are outside'.

In a nanosecond, I did a fairly poor job of putting on some clothes, turning up the fire and dashing out of my apartment, to the side gate where I greeted my parents jovially, and helped them carry my pink luggage that they had 'borrowed to go to Brazil...MOSTLY my mum, to be fair.

Buy here

While my parents told me of their beautiful adventures in Brazil, including what it was like to sit there

and watch our country be defeated in both Manaus and Brasilia,

I cooked them a beautiful pot of beans and vegetables (Learn how)

Does any one remember this? Read my commentary here.
MOVING ON from that National Embarrassment!

My dad wouldn't stop walking into the kitchen, to check on my progress.

''Aha  when is food going to be ready na''? He asked impatiently.
''I am almost done o'' I replied, smiling to myself and thinking how my father never comes to the kitchen unless he is starving... (It may be an African man thing).

***
In the back ground, I could see and hear and hear my mum packing food for my aunt in Kentucky. She does this funny thing where she talks as she is packing, and you are supposed to answer every single thing she says.

So she goes like this ' So I will give this one to aunty Y, so let's see, yes fish... two packs... aha garri. Ah no she didn't ask for garri, Sandy take this garri'...
' Thank you mummy'.
 'Do you want it'?
'Yes mummy'.
''When I come back we shall make small packs for your friends''.
''Yes mummy''.
'' Okay. Good. I'm thirsty. Can I please have some water to drink'?
''There is water in the fridge mummy''.
''Ah! No! I want something with color''.
I gave her a puzzled look, and she quickly added '' Okay you can get iced tea. I am on slim course.''

When In doubt, please choose water.

As I prepared to leave for the store, my mum explained how she was going to stop eating meat when she got back, and go on a serious slim course. I shrugged off the old slogan thinking to myself how carnivorous my mom is! She can't even eat anything without meat, but instead, I said, 'Okay. That's nice'.

Moments later, I was at the 7/11 with my father where we bought a pack of canned Coke's and a bottle of iced tea.

My dad and I have had this coke fight for years, and no matter how much I plead with him to stop drinking Coke, his reply to me is the simple sad truth that 'man must die from one thing'.

I have since stopped arguing with him on drinking Coke, but I make sure to remind him of how dangerous it is every single time I see him with a fresh bottle...

I say No to COKE!

When we got back home, I quickly served them some of the rice, beans and miondo that I had made.

While they ate more of the rice, I had some of the miondo which my mother had brought for me from Cameroon (amongst other things in the three bags lol)

As we ate, my father randomly looked at me and said these words.
'You are very creative'

At first, I thought he was referring to that fact that I had added vegetables like broccoli to the beans stew, to replace the meat craving, but the persistent glow in his eyes told me otherwise.
Smiling from ear to ear, he continued

' I was reading your book on the flight back...'
BUY BOOK HERE

I looked up expectantly, as he struggled to find the words to express his joy.

' You really have a gift' He said.

''I am very impressed''.

' Half the time, I had to stop for a moment, to remember it was your book... that you actually wrote this.'

As he continued to find the words, my heart melted like butter, and I

couldn't take it any more. My father's approval to me, is like one of the things that I live for, and in that moment, I just smiled,  completely dumb founded and at a loss for words.

Its not often that I am unable to speak, but this was definitely one of those moments, and this little girl returned.

The words 'you are creative' in my father's words, can be interpreted as real life as 'You are the best thing that has ever happened' 'I am so proud' 'I think you are talented' 'I love you' 'I wish grandpa was here to read this book' 'I am very impressed'.

My honest, emotional 'thank you' almost got chocked by the miondo that was already going down my throat.

*Miondo is a little hard to chew and swallow in the first place.

So yeah, that was how it happened, and that single moment validated every single tear, heartbreak, struggle, hard work, pain that I had ever felt! Parents don't know how much their appreciation of our work can make us feel, especially our fathers.. African fathers.

AFTERMATH

Hours later, my wonderful Uncle C finally showed up to pick us up! To beat the traffic, we decided to stay indoors and talk a little more. I offered him him a drink and we argued over several topics, mostly including the indiscipline of the Lions and our world cup fever, our late grandpa, my deceased brother and other fun family stuff.

We finally got in the car and drove 6 fun hours through windy roads, clear skies to Dublin.
The city of Dublin, is some 29 miles away from Tracy and one hour out  from San Jose where my book signing was the next day.

When we arrived home, a big dinner was awaiting us!!!

The End!

LESSON LEARNT:

Let your work speak for itself.
It may take time, but it always
comes through if you do
only
your best...

That being said,
I love you all...

Dear Afrikan Girl, Davido, Tiwa or $$$?

Friday June 27 2014

DIARY OF A SUPPOSED-TO-BE-BALLING-AFRIKAN-GIRL

Dear Afrikan Girl,

The temperature today is 83 degrees!  For some of you living in Europe, this could be classified as hot, but I can tell you my dear girl, I have definitely seen worst in this dangerous too-hot-to-be-true Valley of a Place.

I sit, crossed legged on my black office chair, that once held space in the Ikea store at Burbank, admiring my sheer lace pin up bullet bra.

No one knows why I wear these, but I definitely find them sexier than the typical push-up bras that every girl is used to wearing these days. They remind me of a Madonna 1950's look, and I absolutely love them, and own them both in white and black!   [FIND HERE ]

As I lean on this fairly old oak colored desk, several thoughts come to mind. Among them is the beautiful fact that I just saw myself on TV today on GSN's Mind of a Mind, hosted by De Ray Davis. Its a show that I booked sometime last year...

There is also the obvious life-changing news that I learnt of a few days ago, that

I AM the youngest female published author from Cameroon!

All I remember thinking about was : WOW. A long time ago, it was only a dream...

That should be a big deal right? One would think so, but it is not always the case!

In another country, I would be all over the news now... It would be a cause for national glory... but not mine. :(

And that is a complete other conversation.
....

The one that is on my mind now is this...

Where are the $$$$ in my account? I just logged into my  Wells Fargo online banking account now, to read a disappointing, excuse for an account balance. $10!

SOME ONE SHOOT ME ALREADY!

No that's not completely accurate! There is $$$$ in there, but I wish it belonged to me ( Yeah, my dad is visiting)... another story...

What belongs to me on there is $10!!!!

Ten Dollars miserable dollars ! Five thousand francs CFA, ?? 1627.50 Naira? 30.02 Ghana Cedi!  No way!!!

Wasn't it just the other day that I had $2000 dollars? Well, in this city that is nothing, as your BILLS will have the best of you! Rent, phone bills, internet, food, and all that!

Not to talk about the fact that Amazon royalties  for my novel are taking forever to get deposited in my account... book signing sales are being used to pay PR, and plan other trips...Whoa! Maybe I should move to Africa! Or maybe not!

*************
Was it not just three days ago that my dad asked me to get a real job?
I don't blame him...
He is just being a good parent.
But that is another story
*************
THE REAL REAL REAL PROBLEM IS...

Three major things are going on this weekend... I want to go to all three, for various reasons.
Why is this then a problem?

1. One of my favorite African artists DAVIDO is in TOWN for the BET Awards on Saturday, (which I was supposed to go to... But that is another story).  HE has a  PERFORMANCE tonight and my good friend, the DEEJAY invited me...

ADDRESS: Savoy Entertainment Center.218 S La Brea Ave, Inglewood, CA 90301

I have been advertising it on IG for several weeks...

2. My LAWYER is hosting TIWA SAVAGE on SUNDAY, and he just called me thirty minutes ago to invite me... ( She too is here for the BET)

3. My UNCLE just  INVITED me to the BAY AREA to come and  SELL BOOKS this WEEKEND at this CAMEROONIAN EVENT... and rent is due, so ...

Awesome Right?  Some extra money to do the things that I love, but here is the problem...

My uncle will be here to pick up my visiting parents (who land in, from Brazil in half an hour) this afternoon. (Precisely at 2pm)

That leaves me with two options...

1) I can go with them today , and catch a free ride  ( Save $$)

OR

2) STAY and watch Davido tonight, and then Catch a flight tomorrow morning to San Fran to sell my books... and those flights don't come in cheap either. As cheap as they want to be, they can never cost 10 Bucks! That's a fact...

***
So the problem here becomes, what does an Afrikan girl do???

......

MISS A POSSIBLE BOOK SIGNING, TO GO WATCH THESE ARTISTS?
or
GO SELL MY BOOK?

**************
Nah, dear Afrikan Girl, the dream is always more important...

So,

Off to the BAY Area, later this afternoon...

****

LESSON LEARNT:

After several moments of deep thought, the answer came to me!
I am an artist, with numerous fans of my own... nothing as fancy as those two... mine are still in the thousands, but you catch my drift...

The only reason I am so itchy to see Tiwa or Davido is because they worked hard, and went past the stage in which I find myself in, today.

They once felt these feelings I feel now, but they rose above it, and maintained their brand such that it became even more powerful...

I love their music. I am a FAN.

But...

I chose selling my books in the bay area... not only to make money, but also to meet people and continue strengthening  my brand in their minds and hearts, so that one day people would itch to come see me too, and perhaps find themselves in this place where I find my self in today.

AND WHEN THEY DO,
REMEMBER TO CHOOSE YOU ALWAYS!

There would always be millions of chances to meet any celebrity you really like,

but only FEW chances to brand yourself!
That being said,
I love you all...

DIARY OF A SUPPOSED-TO-BE-BALLING-AFRIKAN-GIRL

XOXO. AFRIKANGIRLS DIARY... as i remember it

Dear Afrikan Girl,

Since My blog is new, I am trying to backdate my personal journal  to as far back as I remember... Thank The Lord for social media posts, text messages, emails and what not...

Well this is what I remember!

******
****
*

It was 9am that sort-of-sunny Wednesday morning when my when the  short hasting robot sounds from my  blinged-up Iphone woke me up from a sexy dream, that I would rather not go into...

IPHONE CASE. A gift from my cousin Brittany. Available for 30 Bucks at Polyvore

That sort of  Despicable me minion- bleating sound indicated that it was a Whatsapp Message...

At that time of the morning, (not that 9am is early, but folks, sometimes I sleep at 7.30AM) it could only be one of five people who could have texted me... my Naija- bestie-turned-sis Jubi, a group chat with includes my mum, and brothers Serge and Glenn, or an international message (which I get quite a few of)...

SUBSCRIBE TO WHATSAPP

I wanted to ignore it, but the bleating was so persistent, that if there was an iphone god, I would have cursed it, for making me choose the most annoying ringtone in the world: The Iphone Robot Ringtone. Its so Annoying that, I added the video below, so you can feel my pain.

So, I lazily, rolled my recently skinnier body to the left side of my Queen bed , feeling for my phone.

It was not long before I recoiled lest the strong rays of the sun rays burn my already myopic eyes...

AND then maybe I would cast be on that show..
Burn notice.

Catch my JOKE?

Probably not. Come to think about it, I don't think it is the type of show that most Afrikan girls under 30 watch... We are more likely to see Orange is the New Black, Scandal,  How To Get Away with Murder and all that gory dramatic goodness.

***
I suddenly remembered that it was a big day for us, because today, Cameroon was playing with Croatia, at the World Cup Games, in Manaus. My parents were actually there, watching and enjoying some couple time. (I'll tell you that story later)

OKAY THE STORY CONTINUES...

****
So the Text, right... SMH
You want to know who it was from...

Next time I derail, hit me in the head... #JK

So the text was from one of Cameroon's favorite artists,  recent  MAMA winner for Best New Act in 2014.

The Bayangi guy with eyes we never see, and a well defined hat with the message #StanleyEnow on it... #branding101 Read below

'I have a new song called Slippery When WET with Nyanda,'

was the main message from the conversation...

He also added that I was the first to listen to it...

Feeling honored, I obviously clicked on it, and danced to it, as I

jumped out of bed, shaking my not-so-small waist and cleaning my room.

I also listened to it, when I got dressed in my Cameroonian jersey, and texted some of my friends to brag about how good the match would be... (That is another story)*

Luckily , it was actually a nice song... Of course, what else could we really expect from him? The Best...

ABOUT THE SONG

After dancing to the song for a little bit, I still couldn't get all of the lyrics... Of course Jamaican Patois is not exactly the easiest dialect to understand...

BUT
I did catch the following things:

1. Stanley Enow must love a lot of Cangwa or limestone.
[We use it for several purposes in Cameroon.]

2.  This is a Cameroon and Jamaica duo, starring Nyanda. ( Remember her From Brick and Lace)

3. Stanley says at some point 'Bayangi Boy Don Enter',  which means that it is now Bayangi boy's (his) part in the song. [This is pidgin English]

Think of this song  like the type of song that you want to slow dance to with a guy you really like in a dark club... You know where y'all go...

Well, I loved the song so much that I had to add a link here for you ;)

HEIN PERE (What ever that means. lol)

TumbuTumbu Boss

LESSON LEARNED:

Dear Afrikan girls, Stanley is obviously not a girl, but there are many things we can learn from him...

FOUR THINGS EVERY AFRIKAN GIRL CAN LEARN FROM STANLEY

1. Brand Your Self

Stanley is branded as the guy whose eyes we NEVER see. They are always covered by Stanley Enow branded hats, and sunglasses, giving him a rather mysterious feel if you ask me. Him and his team, always wear #on est high pere t-shirts, which remind me of #tchakap, the brand that Alex song always promotes...
Your image speaks before you do, ladies...

2. Be Bilingual.

Two words... this video... Take a look.
Dear ladies, how many languages do you speak? We all are Afrikan girls, so the least you should be able to speak is two... (At least English/ French/ Portuguese/ Spanish and Your Tribal Language)
At least those 2...
How many do you speak? Check yourself.  Remember, it is never too late!

3. Be great at what You Do.

Dear Afrikan Girl, Let Your Work Speak For Itself.

4. Always Represent

Dear  Afrikan Girl, You are wonderful! You are smart! You come from a rich rich culture... one filled with stories that would take thousands of years of be exhausted! Remember to represent who you are!
It is okay to be you.

Stanley does this by saying : BAYANGI BOY, each time he sings.
FYI, it is the tribe where he comes from. I come from the Nso tribe people...

I DARE YOU

TO STAND

OUT!
