DIARY OF A SUPPOSED-TO-BE-BALLING-AFRIKAN-GIRL
Dear Afrikan Girl,
Have you seen the classic movie 'The Wizard of Oz?'
IF YOU HAVE,
Then, you will surely remember these...
WHAT IF I TOLD YOU that I followed my yellow brick road today, in shoes badder than these...
In fact, they are so bad, so chique that I want to show you...
I couldn't turn it around. Sorry. |

BUT FIRST... LET ME TELL YOU HOW IT HAPPENED...
By the time I woke up that morning, Uncle C had already left for the Cambay Festival, since he was on the planning committee.
It was obviously early, and I idly watched, through clean glass doors, as two birds devoured some Cameroonian peanuts on the porch table outside.
...
My uncle lives in a two bed room apartment so since my parents were in the guest room where I usually stay when I visit, I made do with the very comfortable futon in the living room... so without a doubt, I overheard some habitual breakfast chatter, as I watched the birds.
From time to time, my soft smiles turned into a lazy yawn, and for some reason, I thought about a song...
THIS SONG...
Completely engrossed by the beautiful work of nature, I only caught a faint part of the conversation which mostly had to do with the Lions' indiscipline, a topic that had become somewhat redundant since Cameroon's painful elimination from the world's most watched game. [Read my commentary Here]
My German aunty, Aunt M (we call her Kibong), had made a lot of food as usual, and the delicious aroma of fried eggs hit my nostrils, causing me to sit up and walk towards the bathroom to brush my teeth and join in the feast!
[Side talk ] I really love her ! She's like the coolest chick ever! Not only does she always make you feel comfortable in her house, but she is also funny, understanding and a good example of how to ace inter-racial marriage. (Learn How)

Hey look who's up'' My dad commented jovially as I offered a polite smile, and dashed into the bathroom.
The game between Brazil and Chile started shortly after I joined the breakfast table, and I can tell you that during the world cup, not even a colorful tray of tropical fruits, and fresh bagels and eggs can deter one from such a game, which in my opinion, was the game of the season! RANDOM FACT: Record 16.3 million tweets were sent during Saturday's World Cup game, between Brazil and Chile, the most ever for a life event on social network. |
As I looked around the room, I realized how completely engrossed every one was: eyes all glued to the yellow and blue jerseys running around on the 42 inch black screen.
As much as we love Brazil, every one in the apartment was rooting for Chile! They were not shy to explain that it was because of the shameful way that Brazil defeated Cameroon in our last game, eliminating our cubs, who were once lions, from the world cup.
Frankly, I wanted Chile to win too... But I had different reasons. I'm just one to root for the underdog. Lets just say that Hollywood films have succeeded in conditioning my mind. . . Or have they?
For what it was worth, Chile did put a great fight, but they eventually lost in penalties, to Brazil, at a close call 3-2.
3 - 2
Saved by the bell, we all covered our disappointment by this heart wrenching game by rushing to our various showers to get ready for the festival which was supposed to start in an hour 's time.

After my shower, and a short hair treatment, I chose a tailored blue ankara dress with an A skirt, and a little chest display: One of the many dresses my mother had brought for me.
Feeling defeated by Brazil's win, I chose shiny pair of red devils to match the dress. My stylist would be so proud! [BUY SHOE]

After doing both my make up, and my mother's, I walked out, feeling pretty confident, and ready to earn some rent money in one day! I didn't miss Davido's concert for nothing o my sister, and
IF I was going to earn that $$$$, I had to do so en vogue!!!
We arrived the venue almost forty minutes later.

Several spurts of crazy winds sent my poor books and flyers falling over several times, and after several crying children, eye-balling male customers and a plate of dodo later, I had not sold a book! Not one!
Two hours had gone by! I had to act fast!
If the customers were not going to come to me, I would go to them, I thought, and the worst that could happen was a 'no'. I am quite used to rejection, and able to handle it well, so I decided to give it a try.

My family and I went to the gala, where we danced and had fun! My dad was even challenged to a dance duel by a white man, and Lawd! That man can dance! I caught it on video, but out of respect for my old man, I cannot show y'all!
But I'll tell you this!
My father didn't go down without a fight! He was Chile, and the man was Brazil! The cops also showed up over some cat fight. TMI. Lol, and I got to meet my friend's older sister.
Point is, I had a good time!!!! and Sold all my books!!!

LESSON LEARNT:
Remember when I dissed Davido and Tiwa, and chose selling my books in the bay area... not only to make money, but also to meet people and continue strengthening my brand in their minds and hearts?
It was soooo worth it, and IT WORKED!
1) I made enough money to cover my rent...
2) I met several influential people, who are now fans.
3) I networked with other vendors
4) I spent quality time with my family.
5) I also learnt new sales techniques. [LEARN HERE]
